For those who like the sun, sea, virgin beaches, rivers and water falls, Itararé is the ideal place. Located between the sea and the extensive forest shaped by the “Mata Atlântica ”. Its coast has the most beautiful beaches, many of them so small that they do not appear in the maps of the books, which attract many surfers because of the strong waves and warm water during the entire year, even in winter. The region possesses also rivers and water falls that deserve to be visited.
Its first inhabitants were the Pataxós indigenous, at the beginning of the XVIIth century the Jesuíts constructed the Church São Miguel, still present to today in the historical center of Itacaré. It was an important port in the colonization period and then it began to decline with the emergence of the main roads. The development of the cacao production in the XIXth century impelled his economy, nevertheless at present the tourism is the activity that more grows.
As the majority of the places of the Brazilian North-East, Itacaré can be visited the entire year, since the sun shines and water remains warm. The rainy season concentrates in the winter (July and August), but they do not go so far as to trouble the visitors.
The vegetation of the region of Itacaré is basically the Atlantic Fores (Mata Atlantica), predominant in the region. In spite of the initiatives in favor of preserving it, the deforestation already left randes wounds in the region. An Area of Environmental Protection (APA) has been recently inaugurated as well as a program of environmental education in the effort of braking the damages.
Along with the Bahia’s sea and white sand beaches, palm trees and generous vegetation, Itacaré offers diverse restaurants and bars; the city also is provided with specialities in fishes and sea food. During the day the bars in the beach “ Praia da Concha ” and “ Ribeira “ serves drinks and simple but delicious dishes.
